What is CBT?
CBT is talking therapy that can help an individual manage challenges by changing their thoughts and behaviours. CBT is most commonly used for treating anxiety, stress and depression and it had wider uses.
The approach is that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours can result in negative cycle. With CBT overwhelming problems are broken down into manageable chunks that can be viewed in a more positive way.
Using practical tools and techniques you can change these negative patterns to improve the way you feel. Together looking for practical ways to improve your state of mind on a daily basis.
What are the uses of CBT?
CBT has been shown to be an effective way of treating a number of different mental health conditions.
In addition to depression or anxiety disorders, CBT can also help with:
-
bipolar disorder
-
borderline personality disorder
-
eating disorders – such as anorexia and bulimia
-
obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
-
panic disorder
-
phobias
-
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
-
psychosis
-
schizophrenia
-
sleep problems – such as insomnia
-
problems related to alcohol misuse
CBT is also sometimes used to treat people with long-term health conditions, such as:
-
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
-
chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)
-
fibromyalgia
-
chronic pain
Although CBT cannot cure the physical symptoms of these conditions, it can help people cope better with their symptoms.
Does CBT have to be in person?
Sessions are via telephone, online and in person with Sasha - Louise.
How many CBT sessions should I have?
The number of sessions depends on your current circumstances. The number of CBT sessions required can be between 6-20. Each session is 50 minutes. Sessions are via telephone, online and in person. The sessions cost £65 for online/telephone and a room charge is added for in person sessions.
How often should I have CBT?
It is recommended that all therapy is started weekly. It has been show to be most effective to have weekly sessions while getting to know and build rapport with your therapist and getting to the core of your challenges. It is important at the beginning stages for this reasons. There is a natural stage when it becomes apparent to both client and therapist biweekly sessions will work better, this is usually when the client has practiced and is ready to try implement tools outside of the session. There is a feedback loop with your therapist during this process.
How does CBT compare to other therapies?
CBT focuses on the ways that a person's cognitions (i.e., thoughts), emotions, and behaviors are connected and affect one another. Because emotions, thoughts, and behaviors are all linked, CBT allows for therapists to intervene at different points in the cycle.
